How do we know what we are supposed to do
This question has been answered many ways by different groups over the centuries. You have the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox who adhere to traditional church practices that have been handed down to them through the centuries. You have the Anglican, Methodist, and Lutheran churches (and many contemporary churches) who adhere to what is called the normative principle which says you can do anything not explicitly forbidden by scripture you have the more traditional reformed and anabaptist movements who adhere to the regulative principle, which says that you should only do those things explicitly commanded in scripture. And these days you have sort of a mindlessness conformity to the latest fad in church-growth or “relevant” way of “doing church”.
Certainly I’d hope we’d all agree that we should do the things scripture commands, and avoid the things it prohibits. But still, how much thought do we give our weekly church service or other large, group gatherings?
